Welcome to fashion on an international stage. Today, my focus is shifted to one of those collections where the hype and expectation may exceed the end result. The collection is Balenciaga 2013 Resort and the designer is Nicolas Ghesquiere.
This collection looks like it was inspired by costumes done for a ballet. They reflect the esthetic that was popular at the time especially when it came to costuming. Note the fluidity and color scheme which are applied to this collection and note that these are not hallmarks of the brand then or now.
Mr. Ghesquiere is, of course a media and design darling, who if of that blah blah blah school of fashion as well as the shock value school. He is known for his use of techno fabrics and fashion victim shoes and for the incongruous product that he turns out under the name of Balenciaga. For resort, the product line up is pitch perfect in its adherence to “his” vision for the brand with very few hints of the great master.
I found this collection to be somewhat more approachable by way of the draping and color palette. But comfort is an other matter… For example the so called scuba fabric that is sued to construct the exaggerated ruffles, sleeves and jacket shapes will surely prove to be sauna like hot to wear so in other words. Mr. Ghesquiere’s Balenciaga woman will suffer and sweat for her fashion allegiance! Clothes are meant to be worn and not displayed so comfort might be a good consideration to take into account.
As in the case of Marc Jacobs, one must consider the extraordinary cost of these garments and the limiting appeal on every level. These clothes are not giving retail the boost it needs to sell clothes.
But on appearance account I found this garments to be absolutely perfect and one of my most adored resort collections of 2013…
Here is a glimpse of the Balenciaga 2013 Resort Collection…
